black eyes focused on her face, and Theo shifted uncomfortably.
“When was that? How long have you been following me around?”
He shifted a little, took a drink of water. “I just got into town last night.”
“You followed me home last night?” she asked. I knew it. I knew it was him. “That’s right, go home.
You’re safe, I promise.” That was him. Goddess, that was him!
“Well, yes, actually. I was laying traps around your block, defenses. There was a Seeker following you last night.”
“A Seeker…like the thing at the shop?” Theo’s throat was dry. She took another drink of juice.
He nodded. His hair was drying rapidly and beginning to look softer, not slick with water. He ran his hand back through it, obviously used to having it up in gelled spikes, and grimaced a little. “Yeah. The thing at the shop was a Slider, not a Seeker. Sliders work alone, they feed on psychics and addicts. The Seeker following you was the kind that the Crusade uses to kill Lightbringers. Good thing I was there.” Theo realized that she was shaking. She set her orange juice down. “I should go put the laundry in the wash,” she said, her voice thin and tight. She made it to her feet in a rush, almost upsetting her glass. He grabbed it, his hand moving so quickly it blurred.
“Theo,” he said. “It’s okay. You’ve got time to get used to the idea.”
“What idea?” she asked, her voice shaking. “I suppose I have no choice, not if I want to keep living here.
This is my home now, and you’re telling me that if I stay…those things will keep coming after me. And you…what do you want from me?”
Dante set her glass down carefully. “Nothing you don’t want to give,” he said. “I’ll wait for you, Theo. I mean it.”
“Wait for what?” she almost yelled, and then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The windows were rattling with her anger. Something inside her that had Suzanne’s voice was telling her to calm down. She could hurt someone or something if she lost control. Thorin looked up from his perch on the couch. His ears were laid back, and his yellow eyes were slitted.
“Theo,” Dante said, softly. Just that.
Theo took a deep breath. “Wait for what?” she repeated, a little more calmly. “What is it that you want from me, Dante?”
“Anything you care to give,” he said, and looked down at his plate. “You stop the pain, Theo. I was…
Well, I never believed in a lot of what Circle Lightfall says about the Watchers and the Lightbringers, but I think I’m starting to. I think I was meant to be your protection, Theo. If you don’t…I mean, if you can’t stand the thought of me being with you…”
“No,” Theo said.
